ABOUT THIS TOOL +
The SBS Materials and Grades Guide is an interactive fastener material standards reference built by Specialty Bolt and Screw, Inc. (SBS) for design engineers, mechanical engineers, quality professionals, and procurement teams who need fast access to the governing specifications behind common fastener grades. The tool presents the primary inch series and metric material standards side by side, with direct links to SBS technical data sheets and the full SBS Standards Library.
The tool is organized into two sections. The Common Fastener Material Standards grid displays material categories including Steel, Stainless Steel, and Stainless Steel High Temp across Inch Series and Metric Series columns. Hovering over any standard code opens a tooltip panel showing a full description of the specification, a link to the SBS Technical Data Sheet, and a shortcut to the SBS Standards Library. The Engineering Calculators and Tools section below provides quick access to five companion tools, each with its own hover tooltip describing its function.
Each standards entry displays the official designation, a plain-language description of scope and coverage, a direct link to the corresponding SBS technical data sheet, and a secondary link to locate the original standard in the SBS consensus standards library. Companion tool cards show the tool name and a brief functional summary, and link directly to the relevant calculator or reference page on the SBS e-catalog.
This tool supports a wide range of real engineering and procurement workflows. During BOM review, engineers can confirm which material specification governs a given fastener grade without leaving the page. Supplier communication is simplified by sharing the exact standard designation and linked data sheet in a single step. Inspection planning teams use the tool to verify mechanical property requirements by grade before incoming inspection. Sourcing decisions involving metric-to-inch substitutions are supported by the side-by-side inch and metric layout, which makes cross-series comparison immediate. Procurement professionals evaluating stainless alloy options can distinguish between standard corrosion-resistant grades and high-temperature bolting requirements at a glance.
The tool covers specifications from SAE, ASTM, and ISO, including SAE J429 for inch series steel fastener grades, ISO 898-1 for metric carbon steel and alloy steel property classes, ASTM F593 for stainless steel bolts and hex cap screws in inch sizes, ISO 3506-1 for corrosion-resistant metric fastener property classes, and ASTM A193 for alloy and stainless steel bolting in high-temperature and high-pressure service. Engineers researching fastener material grade lookup, SAE J429 bolt grades, ASTM F593 stainless steel specifications, ISO 898-1 property class reference, or ASTM A193 high-temp bolting requirements will find this tool a practical first reference before consulting the full standard.
